Salimpour Performance 1 and 2

Salimpour Performance 1 and Performance 2 represent the most advanced performance skills and technical training in belly dance.  Students develop their performance skills as they prepare for four performance exams.  While working towards Performance Certification is demanding, it is achievable for any dancer.  The School is committed to inclusivity and helping you reach your goals.  Students are mentored one-on-one during Performance testing preparation, and the recital process is personalized and crafted for each individual.  With School approval, modifications and options are available for each step below to address physical limitations, injury, illness, etc.  Limitations are not obstacles; they are opportunities for you to realize your potential and for the student body and School to learn and grow.   Contact the Certification Coordinator for more information.

Performance 1 is comprised of two required courses and two performance exams:

  • Course S401d.  Salimpour Performance 1: Technique Testing and Choreography Presentation Preparation

Training and Resources

  • Use the Training and Resources lists from the Level 200 and Level 300 courses.
  • Learn the required Performance 1 and 2 certification choreographies as soon as you are Foundations 1 and 2 certified.  For most students, it typically takes a year or more of consistent work to master a choreography.
  • Develop your Personal Performance Catalog.  Read below for details, and click here to see the sets.

Performance 1 and 2 Choreography

As part of the Performance 1 and 2 certification testing requirements, students must be approved (“signed off”) on the Performance 1 and 2 choreographies.  For each testing course, students are required to submit their choreography videos (one video for each required choreography) along with music mapping the week prior to the specific course.  (Students will be admitted to the online classroom ten days before the start date of the course to allow students to submit their choreography videos and mapping assignments.)

The choreographies noted as “Suhaila Solo” represent choreographed versions of pieces from Suhaila’s extensive performance career in the Middle East and Arabic Night Clubs.  These pieces serve as examples for such things as entrances, exits, and musicality that will be helpful as you work on your Improvisation Performance Catalog.

  • Performance 1 Choreographies
    • Nebtiti Mnein El Hikeiya
    • Maharjan (Suhaila Solo choreography)
    • Yanna Yanna (performed twice on one video:  once with R-dom cymbals, and once with L-dom cymbals)
    • Enta Omri
    • Lissa Fakir (Suhaila Solo choreography)
  • Performance 2 Choreographies
    • Hayati (performed once with cymbals as written)

Performance Catalog Instructions

Highlight Set: The week before the first day of each Performance online course (S401e, R401d, S402e, and R402d), students will submit a video showing the student’s best work of solo improvisation within the past two years (called the Highlight Set or Performance Catalog).  The video will contain footage from 2-3 pieces, and be 20-24 minutes in length. Performances should include 60% of Intermediate technique which includes layering two (or more) belly dance moves, doubletime movements, and finger cymbals (when appropriate), etc.  For Performance 2 specifically, performances should be comprised of 40% Jamhaila, which includes characterization, layering, and finger cymbals (as appropriate). As applicable, dancers should demonstrate their emotional context and intent, and demonstrate their use of the stage and audience projection grids.  The Intermediate and Performance certification choreographies are examples of the level of work that students should be submitting.

Once the Highlight Set has been submitted before each Performance 1 and 2 course, the instructor will evaluate the video and give you feedback. If the instructor determines that more work is required, the second Highlight Set for that course will be developed in private lessons. Some students may need to complete a second submission of a Highlight Set to fulfill the requirements for each course.

As each Highlight Set is showing the student’s best work over the last two years, students are encouraged to continue performing as much as possible, using the feedback and directions given during previous evaluations and courses, to build their next Highlight Set. Performing is a skill that takes development, and improvisation performance opportunities are not always abundant. It goes without saying students will need to accumulate as much footage as possible, and that can take time.

The performances should be done in full costuming, including hair and make-up.

Not all students have perfect performance venues.  If you preform regularly at a restaurant, even if on a stage, that footage might be too problematic because of lighting or people walking in front of the camera.  Students are being creative with setting up venues.  Maybe you can persuade your fellow dance class members to stay a bit later after a class so you can get into full costume and do a performance for them.  Maybe you have an area at your home or a meeting room at your office or a community room at your apartment that can be set up for a performance, and you can invite friends, family, and neighbors to watch.  The point is that you dance in full costume for an audience.  For students working on their catalogs during shelter-in-place orders (such as Covid-19 in 2020), contact the School to discuss alternatives so that your training can continue.

If you have any questions about whether footage from a specific performance can count towards your performance catalog, please contact us for clarification. Evaluation criteria is listed in the Evaluation toggle below.

Once the student is enrolled in a Performance course, they will be invited to the Google Classroom where they will be able to submit their assignments. Assignments can only be accepted through Google Classroom. There are several ways to submit assignments in Google Classroom, and students can find more information with options and specifics here. As the Highlight Set video is due before the start of the online course, students are encouraged to have the video edited and ready to be submitted well in advance of the course.

Maintain a written log of your video performances, following the list below. This documentation must be submitted with your video.

  • Performance No. __
  • Date of performance/Venue
  • Duration of performance
  • Performer(s)
  • Performance Type (improvisation with live band, improvisation to recorded music with name of Performance Set, etc.)
  • Music title/composer/lyricist for each song in video
  • Emotional Perspective
  • Your perceived % of layering (per format)
  • Include a note on why (or why not) finger cymbals were used.
  • Teaching Certified (L5) instructor approved and what date
  • Analyze your improvised performances, including only the best that meet the 60%+ Intermediate technique requirement. For each improvised performance, include a list of the 60%+ moves (written in nomenclature); for each item on the list, include the minute (ex:  0:42, 2:21) in the video where the move can be seen in the video.
  • For Performance 2 specifically: Analyze your improvised performances, including only the best that meet the 40%+ Jamhaila and riffing requirement.  For each improvised performance, include a list of the 40%+ moves (written in nomenclature); for each item on the list, include the minute (ex:  0:42, 2:21) in the video where the move can be seen in the video.

The performance evaluations will include the following criteria:

  • Recorded Music.  Most students will use music selections from the performance sets.  The specifically listed music selections and albums are to be used; no alternative version substitutions permitted without pre-approval. For Performance 2 specifically, be aware of Jamila stylization, eras, and sentiments as discussed in the online courses.
  • Live Music.  In rare cases, dancers may have access to quality live Arabic music.  For this option, dancers perform to selections listed on the 100+ Compositions list (click here) performed by a live Arabic band (comprised of at least 3 band members).  If in doubt about whether a live band’s music can be used in your catalog, please submit a clip of music from the band you wish to use to the School for approval.
  • Finger Cymbals are an integral element of Salimpour School training.  As appropriate, use finger cymbals in your performances.  Indicate for each performance why or why not finger cymbals were used with a brief explanation of why this choice was made. For Performance 2 specifically: most, if not all, sets should include a section that demonstrates finger cymbal proficiency. In the event they are not used, provide a brief explanation of why this choice was made.
  • Basic posture & alignment: Did the dancer maintain home position throughout the performance?
  • Technique: Demonstrates a strong & identifiable Suhaila/Jamila presence defined by the presented format; based on technique and signature moves executed with confidence & ease.
  • Layering: Includes proficient layering throughout; based on the required skill level necessary to test for the Level 4 and defined in the training process of the presented format Suhaila/Jamila.
  • Composition: Presence of unity, continuity (transitions), and variety (contrasts and repetition)
  • Dynamics: Energy of movement expressed in varying intensities, accent, and quality
  • Stamina: technique, emotion, and audience connection maintained throughout
  • Transitions: Smooth (not choppy) changes from one movement to another; Continuity.
  • Stage Use: Space is used effectively and efficiently; all parts of the stage and the dancer’s personal dance space (Up Stage, Down Stage, etc.)
  • Stage Presence: Confidence and presence on stage; continuity throughout performance
  • Projection: Confident presentation of body and energy to communicate movement meaning clearly to audience
  • Finger Cymbals: Proficiency in finger cymbal playing; multiple patterns, matching to music, on time.
  • Musicality: Attention (awareness) and responsiveness to musical elements
  • Music: The music selection matches the required music list and era for the presented format Suhaila/Jamila.
  • Props: If props were used; presented with proficient skill and in a professional manor.
  • Costuming: Does the dancer’s costume fit the designated format stylization and era Suhaila/Jamila.

Performance 1 Testing Steps

Once you are Intermediate 1 and 2 certified and feel you have a good working knowledge of the required technique, choreographies, and catalogs, you are ready to make the push towards Performance 1. The process involves the following steps.  Students wishing to test must contact the School to discuss course enrollment and preparation.

Pre-Course Preparation.  For the Salimpour Performance 1:  Technique Testing and Choreography Presentation Preparation course, students must prepare in advance for the following:

  • Performance 1 Testing Technique Drills.  Throughout the Performance 1 course (Testing Preparation and Choreography Presentation Preparation) students will be prompted to submit subgroups of the testing drills for evaluation.  A version of the testing drills is listed on the exams page, and students should develop these drills in advance before taking the course.
  • Performance Certification Choreography.  Students should prepare the Performance 1 choreography in advance of the workshop and be prepared to submit video of their performances for evaluation one week prior to the start date of the course.
  • The videos must be filmed in a space with lighting bright enough for clear video evaluation of technique (and finger cymbal patterns, R and L dominant, if applicable).  For choreography, note that separate video may be requested of finger cymbal pattern playing without dancing the choreography.
  • Performance Catalog.  Students should prepare to submit a Performance Catalog Highlight Set to be submitted for evaluation one week prior to the start date of the course.  See Performance Catalog for content detail. Your performance catalog should represent your best solo improvisation work and show that you are already consistently working at a Performance 1 (S4) level.
  • Prepare and photograph yourself in three options each for costume, hairstyle, and makeup to be submitted during the course for approval to be used in dress rehearsals toward the end of the course and for the final performance exam presentation.

Following successful completion of the Performance 1: Technique Testing and Choreography Presentation Preparation course, students will receive approval to produce and present their Choreography Presentation Performance (Gauntlet) within four months. Students will produce their own Choreography Presentation performance (book performance venue, advertise) with School approval and following School guidelines.  For evaluation, the student will submit video of the actual Choreography Presentation performance with an evaluation fee.  Once a student has successfully completed the Choreography Presentation Performance exam, the next step is developing a senior recital.

Pre-Course Preparation.  For the Salimpour Performance 1:  Senior Recital Preparation course, students must prepare in advance for the following:

  • Submit video of each section of the recital for evaluation one week prior to the start of the course.
  • Submit mapping and gridwork (stage and audience) for each section of the recital for evaluation one week prior to the start of the course.
  • Submit a story arc and audience cast for each piece (as demonstrated and taught as part of Course S401e).
  • Submit new video of Performance Catalog Highlight Set with documentation, one week prior to the start of the course. One Highlight Set video is due before each Performance 1 and 2 course.
  • The videos must be filmed in a space with lighting bright enough for clear video evaluation of technique (and finger cymbal patterns, R and L dominant, if applicable).  For choreography, note that separate video may be requested of finger cymbal pattern playing without dancing the choreography.
  • Prepare and photograph yourself in three options each for costume, hairstyle, and makeup to be submitted during the course for approval to be used in dress rehearsals toward the end of the course and for the final performance exam presentation.

Following successful completion of the Performance 1: Recital Preparation course, students will receive approval to produce and present their Personal Recital Performance within four months. Students will produce their own recital (book performance venue, advertise) with School approval and following School guidelines.  For evaluation, the student will submit video of the actual senior recital performance with an evaluation fee.  Once a student has successfully completed the Personal Recital Performance exam, the student is eligible for Salimpour Performance 1 certification.

Note:  The 12 week courses are designed for students to submit their work for evaluation, assuming the student has already done a significant amount of preparation on their own.  In some cases, students may require additional effort to prepare for the performance exams.  Students may need to schedule private lessons with Suhaila for further development or retake certain courses.  For performance catalogs, students may be required to continue work on their performance catalogs under the guidance of the Certification Coordinator or assigned Teaching Certified (L5) licensed instructors.  Additional review and evaluation will require additional fees.

Performance 2 Testing Steps

Once you are Performance 1 and Intermediate 2 certified and feel you have a good working knowledge of the required technique, choreographies, and catalogs, you are ready to make the push towards Performance 2. The process involves the same steps as Performance 1, but with attendance at the Performance 2 courses (Choreography Presentation Preparation and Senior Recital Preparation).  Students wishing to test must contact the School to discuss course enrollment and preparation.
